New York Presbyterian and Columbia University Medical Center have agreed to pay the largest HIPAA settlement for a breach of electronic PHI.
A physician employed by Columbia University Medical Center deactivated a server resulting in the accessibility of the electronic health records of nearly 6,800 patients by internet search engines. Citing a lack of technical safeguards, the OCR assessed penalties of $4.8 million against New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center. The hospital has agreed to pay $3.3 million and the University has agreed to pay $1.5 million.
