The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of Health and Human Services (HHS) is warning of a new fraudulent scheme that is hitting the public. In this scheme, someone pretending to be from a government agency such as HHS contacts you via phone, email, or letter. The person tries to sound legitimate by giving a government employee ID number. He then tells you about a government financial incentive you can receive for paying your taxes on time and asks for your personal information such as your social security number. If you receive any type of message like this, you should not respond, and instead contact HHS on their tip line at 1-800-HHS-TIPS, or contact another law enforcement agency.
