The founding partner of Deters, Benzinger & LaVelle, Charles H. Deters has practiced law since 1955. He has practiced in nearly every area of law and has focused on health care law, banking law and corporate law.
In 1950, Charlie graduated from Villa Madonna Academy, now Thomas More College, with degrees in history and political science. In 1953 he obtained a law degree from the University of Cincinnati and spent two years in the military in Germany.
Charlie has served as president of a savings and loan and been a director or officer of numerous other financial institutions, including Covington Trust and Banking Company (now Huntington National Bank), First National Bank of the Florida Keys, Farmer's National Bank of Walton and the Independent National Bank of Ocala, Florida. Currently he serves as chairman of board of directors of The Deters Company, which owns and operates a chain of Wendy's restaurants, Blue Pantry Convenience Stores and BP Service Stations. The company also owns the corporate Snappy Tomato Pizza franchise, with stores in six states and Great Britain.
For over 20 years, Charlie served on the board of St. Elizabeth Medical Center, and was chairman for 10 years. He served on the boards of St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, for over 20 years, Providence Hospital in Cincinnati for 15 years (6 as chairman), Our Lady of Bellefonte in Ashland, Kentucky, St. Francis Hospital in Cincinnati and St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy, Illinois. For many years Charlie also served on the board of overseers and the board of trustees of Thomas More College. He was active in a full-time operational role at the College for two years in the mid-1970's. He has received both an honorary doctorate and the Thomas More Medallion from the College.
Charlie and his wife, Mary Sue, have 11 children, four of who are attorneys. Since 1965 they have lived near Walton, Kentucky on a thoroughbred horse farm.
